Keep Your Jeep Running Smoothly With These Service Tips
Jeeps are great SUVs that are known for standing out and running hard, usually for a long time. Whether you’ve recently bought a Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, or other Jeep truck or SUV, you’ll want to give it the care it deserves over its entire lifetime. By doing so, you’ll ensure that not only will your Jeep last you as long as you need it, but it’ll also look and drive great, and maintain its value when you’re ready to trade it in.
Regular Maintenance
Of course, every vehicle needs some level of maintenance to keep it running well. Here’s a list of maintenance tasks, ranging from oil changes to belt replacements:
- Every month, check your tire pressure, as well as the headlights and taillights
- Every 4,000 miles, check your Jeep’s oil and filter, as well as the chassis lubrication, replacing if necessary
- Every time you change the oil, also inspect all the belts and hoses under the hood for wear and tear
- Every 6,000–8,000 miles, rotate the tires and balance the wheels
- Every 20,000 miles or so, replace the engine’s air filter and check the wheel alignment
- Every 50,000 miles, flush and refill the cooling system of your Jeep
- Every 50,000–80,000 miles, replace the drive belt, hose, and engine timing belt, if you haven’t already
Jeep-Specific Maintenance
Since Jeeps are known for being absolute off-roading beasts, you might’ve bought one for that exact purpose. If so, there’s a number of other important maintenance tasks to keep track of, since running the Jeep on the trail is much more strenuous than keeping it on the paved road.
- After any off-roading you do, be sure to check the tire pressure
- If you ford any water deeper than your wheel hubs, replace your Jeep’s differential fluid, just to be safe
- After off-roading, check your wheel balance and weights
- If your Jeep has drum brakes, clean them thoroughly after any off-road drives, since mud and snow can reduce their efficacy
- Check your air filter more regularly than normal, especially if you drive a lot of dusty trails
- Have your wheels realigned every three months
