Overview
RAM 3500 heavy-duty pickup is available in three cab styles: regular, Crew Cab and Mega Cab. It was fully redesigned with revised suspension tuning, updated styling and a new crew cab model last year. The 2012 RAM 3500 gets a new trim level, the RAM Outdoorsman and a host of standard features including an electronic brake controller (for all but the base ST trim) and an electronic display of vehicle information. The navigation system is updated and a spray-in bedliner is available. The other available trim levels are ST, SLT, Laramie and Power Wagon. The New Laramie Longhorn is most luxurious RAM truck so far.
Power and performance
A 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel inline-6 rated at an impressive 350 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque is standard. The standard transmission is a six-speed manual with an option for a six-speed automatic. The Cummins engine is equipped with a big-rig-like exhaust brake which provides additional stability and braking power when towing very heavy loads. The 2012 RAM 3500 tows up to 17,600 pounds when properly equipped.
Body and styling
The RAM 3500 comes with dual rear-wheels, diesel engine, automatic transmission and its 4.10 rear axle has a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,000 lbs. There is a Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) of 5,500 lbs on 4x4 models equipped with the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine which allows for more front-weight carrying capability including greater snowplow weights.
All RAM 3500 trucks are now standard with Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) and Tire pressure monitoring (TPM) system. Electronic brake controller is standard on SLT, Outdoorsman, Power Wagon and Laramie. Hunter Green Pearl and Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl are two new colors for 2011. There are some new wheel options and interior colors too.
Safety Features
Antilock disc brakes and side curtain airbags are among the standard safety features. Power adjustable pedals are standard on the Laramie but optional on the SLT.
